Misleading News!

About a So-called Success Story

Jadunath Mukhopadhaya

A carrot of promises are now dangling before the hopeful mankind: Cancer cure is not far away. On 6 January, Anand Bazar Patrika reported a 'success' story of four Bengali researchers, who claimed that very cheap cure of cancer is at our doorstep. Their paper recently published in the 'International Journal of Cancer' claimed that they have successfully arrested the growth of mice cancer by injecting Dopamine. But if you read between the lines of the reported success story, you will be astonished to know that Dopamine has not undergone any human trial yet. It will take not less than 5 years to know its effect on naturally evolved human cancer. Why so much hurry then to propagate Bengali re-searchers(!) so called success story?
Cancer researchers world over have tried to attack and abolish the blood vessel going to a cancer, but miserably failed repeatedly. Unable to attack the blood vessels of a cancer directly, they tried to attack some basic factors that help blood vessels to grow in a cancer. In medical parlance it is called Tumor Angiogenesis Factors (TAF). By suppressing TAF, it was said: we can abolish the supply line in a cancer, thus an eventual death of cancer due to starvation will be the net outcome. But cancer proved to be more tougher than the TAF-experiment.
The so called success story can be easily rejected as a mere trash, if you read between the lines of the above report itself. Dopamine, which they applied for inhibiting the growth of lab-grown, transplanted mice cancer will be a total failure when applied to inhibit or destroy naturally evolved human cancer. Human cancers are not lab-grown, it evolves from the tissues of its carriers, thus cancer is an integral and inseparable part of its carriers.
And what is Dopamine? It is a catecholamine synthesized by the adrenal gland and intermediate product in the synthesis of norepinephrine. It acts to increase the blood pressure, specially systolic blood pressure and acts as a neuro-transmitter in the nervous system. It is but natural then, if Dopamine is applied to a cancer patient who is otherwise at peace with cancer, serious side effects will make his life hell.
